Your M-Pesa statement is one of the most complete financial records most Kenyans will ever have โ and almost nobody reads it properly. Every time you buy goods, send money, pay a bill, or withdraw cash, Safaricom logs it. That's potentially hundreds of data points every month, sitting idle in your SMS inbox.
Step 1: Pull Your Last 3 Months of Statements
Dial *334# and navigate to "M-Pesa Statement". Request statements for the last 3 months sent to your email. Three months gives you enough data to spot patterns โ one month is too small a sample.
Step 2: Categorise Every Transaction
The painful part. Group every transaction into categories: Food & Groceries, Transport, Utilities, Entertainment, Savings, Rent, Business. Don't overthink the categories โ start broad. The goal is to see where the money is actually going, not to build the perfect system on day one.
Step 3: Find Your "Leaks"
Most people are surprised by two things: how much they spend on food delivery, and how many small transactions add up. A KES 500 Glovo order 3 times a week is KES 6,000 a month โ almost a quarter of a KES 25,000 salary. These "leaks" are invisible when you only look at individual transactions but obvious when you see the monthly total.
Step 4: Set a Realistic Budget โ Not an Aspirational One
The most common budgeting mistake is setting a budget based on what you wish you spent, not what you actually spend. If you've been spending KES 18,000 on food, a KES 8,000 food budget will fail in week one. Start by cutting 10โ15% from your highest spend categories. Build from there.
