Most saving advice online is written for people with stable salaries, low costs of living, and no social obligations. Nairobi is different. The cost of living is high relative to salaries, harambees and social contributions are expected, and the city has an expensive social culture. Here's what actually works.
1. Pay yourself first โ before anything else
The moment your salary arrives, transfer your savings target to a separate account or M-Pesa savings goal immediately. If you wait until end of month to save "whatever is left", the answer will always be zero.
2. Cancel the subscriptions you've forgotten about
Go through your M-Pesa history and bank statements. You will find subscriptions you no longer use. Netflix, Spotify, Showmax, cloud storage, gym memberships โ these small monthly charges add up to thousands every year.
3. Set a food delivery budget and track it weekly
Food delivery is the biggest discretionary spend for urban Kenyans in their 20s and 30s. It's convenient but expensive. Set a weekly limit and stick to it. Cooking at home 4 out of 7 days can save KES 8,000โ15,000 per month for a single person.
